The Lens of Motherhood

One reason we go to the theatre is to be validated; to see something happen on stage that makes us feel like shouting “Yes! That’s it! That is how it felt. I’m not crazy. I’m not alone.” Unfortunately, women who are moms rarely have that experience in musical theatre. Many common, but profound and extraordinary, experiences have not been the subject of a musical, or even a song in a musical. I’ll tell you why: Because there are so few musicals written by women who are moms, and even fewer written specifically about what that means. That’s a glaring omission in the MT canon.
