In Regretting Almost Everything, our two-person musical about marriage — AKA Love, Sex, and Kids — Beth sings the role of Anne. Anne is a middle-aged woman who ultimately leaves her long marriage when she’s forced to accept the fact her husband’s passion for her can’t be revived.

A year after Anne and Clay divorce, Clay tells Anne he’s realized he’s gay.

As a long married person myself, writing this song forced me to grapple with an interesting question: How should learning something new about your spouse — and let’s posit your spouse didn’t know either — something that goes to a core identity, affect the way you view your relationship after the fact. In the context of Regretting Almost Everything, for example, should Clay’s revelation that he’s gay change Anne’s assessment of her marriage?

What if, after many years together, you discovered your spouse was a different age or ethnicity than you’d believed? What if you’re an observant Jew man and discover your spouse had been adopted and her birth mother hadn’t been Jewish? Should these types of revelations matter?

I suppose the answer most likely is: Sometimes yes, and sometimes no.
