Beth Leavel
Making a concept album of a musical comedy about marriage like the Regretting Almost Everything concept album, requires a lot of people. Someone to turn pages for the pianist, assistant engineers, a videographer, musicians, publicist, etc.
No, I Don't (Yes, I Do) - Lyric
I know if I’ve thought or felt something, so have legions of other women. And I believe that after a couple of decades, even in the strongest of marriages, most of us wish we could relive the romance and excitement of falling in love.
Jim Master's Show!
Last night, Danny and I appeared on The Jim Master’s Show Live to talk about Regretting Almost Everything, our two-person musical comedy. Jim’s show is like an old-school talk show, long and conversational, and it was great.
What's the show about?
When you tell someone you’ve written a new musical comedy, the first question they ask is: You? (Just kidding.) The first thing they ask is: What’s it about?
Do It All Again
In the weeks leading up to the first cabaret performance of Regretting Almost Everything, there came a day Bill asked us to play through what we had. We did. When we’d finished, Bill said we were missing two things:
Begin with something true…then go where the story demands
During our last semester at NYU, William Finn (Bill) offered Danny and me two nights in Mr. Finn’s Cabaret at Barrington Stage in Pittsfield, MA that coming August. He advised that we write what only I could write — a show about a long marriage.
The First Cabaret
We first presented songs from Regretting Almost Everything at Mr. Finn’s cabaret at Barrington Stage in August of 2017. Though some have been significantly revised, 10 of them are still in the show and on the concept album:
We Made Kids - Lyric
There are five songs about being a parent or grandparent in Regretting:
We Made Kids , Waiting Up, Elle, The Baby Likes Me Best, and Fatherhood. Below are the lyrics to our first single, We Made Kids:
After the Mastering
Making an album doesn’t end when the album itself is made. That’s only part one. Part two is letting people know the album exists.
No Regrets
Danny and I met at NYU in 2015. We were classmates, members of Cycle 26 of the MFA program in musical theatre writing. When we began writing together in William Finn’s class, we never could have guessed that songs we wrote in response to Bill’s prompts were the beginning of what is now, Regretting Almost Everything. Nor would we have dared to dream that one day, two of Broadway’s greatest, Beth Leavel and Jeff Blumenkrantz, would record some of those songs.
